Required Classes:

These are the required courses a security guard must complete in order to receive a California Guard Registration Card (Guard Card). California law requires all security guards to be licensed through the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. The license is called a Guard Registration Card, or “Guard Card” for short.

What you need to do:

  • An 8 hour course that includes “Powers to Arrest” and “Appropriate Use of Force” must be completed before applying for a “Guard Card”.
  • 32 hours of continuing education must be completed within 6 months after your guard card is issued.
  • The 40 hour option bundles the two required courses together to saves you some money.
  • You must be at least 18 years of age in order to apply for a guard card.
  • The test at the end of the course is an open book, open notes, multiple choice test.

How it works:

  • Most courses are available online 24/7/365
  • The Powers to Arrest & Appropriate Use of Force sections are part self-paced and part instructor-led.
  • Use your Computer or Smart Phone
  • No Reading Required
  • Multi-media course
  • Download all documents upon completion
