But zoom out a bit, and you’ll see a bigger picture: a set of interconnected trends that are quietly undermining the very foundations of American liberty, prosperity, and self-reliance. These pressures aren’t always part of one grand plan, but they reinforce each other in ways that weaken the middle class, national unity, and constitutional order. Donald Trump’s America First agenda has confronted many of these head-on. For those who value the Bill of Rights, especially the First and Second Amendments, connecting the dots is worth doing.
The Economic Side: Who’s Really in Charge? America built the world’s strongest middle class through a Hamiltonian approach, investing in infrastructure, protecting key industries, and encouraging broad-based growth. Today, that model faces pushback from global forums like the World Economic Forum, which promote stakeholder capitalism and supranational rules that often put international priorities ahead of American workers.
At the same time, Federal Reserve policies, long periods of easy money followed by inflation fights, have inflated asset prices for the wealthy while squeezing everyday families. Layer on heavy regulation from the administrative state (sometimes called the “fourth branch” of government), and you get a system that favors big corporations and insiders over small businesses and Main Street. The result? A shrinking middle class and growing frustration.
Migration, Division, and Social Strain Uncontrolled migration from developing countries into the U.S. and Europe adds real pressure. It strains housing, schools, welfare systems, and wage levels for working Americans. Large-scale inflows without strong assimilation can change communities and stretch resources thin. This is compounded by the unfettered flow of illegal deadly drugs across open borders, which has devastated families and communities.
Unchecked migration without assimilation also risks the destruction of the host country’s culture, which many believe is by design. This pairs with cultural efforts, such as DEI policies and identity politics, that push division along racial, ethnic, or other lines. When Americans are pitted against each other, it becomes harder to push back together against centralized power or failed policies. Jesus told us that every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. Even the Romans understood the concept of divide et impera (divide and conquer). We must not be blind to that same approach when it is used against American society.
Another powerful tool for division is the decades-old effort to degrade our education system, which has dumbed down Americans’ understanding of our shared history. Unchecked fraud in social programs, foreign aid, and voter registration only adds to the strain, undermining trust and draining resources from those who need them most.
Disarmament and the Loss of Self-Reliance Running through all of this is a persistent push toward disarmament, tighter domestic gun controls, international treaties, and narratives that treat armed citizens as problems rather than responsible defenders of liberty. George Mason warned, “To disarm the people; that it is the best and most effectual way to enslave them.” The Second Amendment exists for exactly this reason: to ensure free people can protect themselves and serve as a final check when institutions falter. History shows that governments expanding control often prefer disarmed populations.
How Are These Trends Connected? They don’t require a secret handshake to be related. Many share a common worldview that distrusts strong nation-states, traditional American values, and individual self-reliance. Global and bureaucratic solutions replace democratic accountability. Loose monetary and regulatory policies benefit elites. Migration and division keep people distracted and fragmented. Disarmament removes the practical ability to resist overreach.
Together, they erode the independent, armed, and cohesive citizenry the Founders had in mind.
Trump’s America First as a Direct Response This is where Donald Trump’s agenda stands out. Border security, energy independence, deregulation, tariffs to protect American industry, skepticism of globalist organizations, and strong defense of gun rights all push back against these trends. Love him or not, his approach is explicitly designed to restore national sovereignty, economic opportunity for working people, and constitutional priorities. For Second Amendment advocates, it represents a bulwark against the slow erosion of rights and self-reliance.
Why This Should Matter to Every 2A Supporter The right to bear arms isn’t just about the range or home defense. It’s insurance for a free society. When economic opportunity shrinks, culture fragments, and government grows unchecked, the conditions that sustain liberty weaken. Recognizing these connections doesn’t mean chasing every conspiracy, it means defending the whole system that makes the Second Amendment meaningful.
